John is the owner/operator of Smylie’s Independent Grocer in Trenton, Ontario. John came to Trenton in 2003 in a temporary capacity as manager of Trenton Independent Grocer, but by 2005 had fallen in love with the Quinte area, and consequently seized the opportunity to purchase the franchise, and moved his family from Brockville to Trenton.
Within a very short time, John became involved in the Quinte community, becoming the president of the Chamber of Commerce, and the first non-military civilian to sit on the Board of the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre. Even before becoming a Rotarian, John was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary International’s highest award. John is the Chair of the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation, director of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council, and Honorary Colonel of 436 (Transport) Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton.
John has received many awards and accolades for his professional achievements and volunteer contributions. These awards include:

John’s passion is preserving and expanding the quality of life that can only exist in a vibrant community. He knows firsthand the tremendous impact of grassroots organizations, and his dedication to family, community and service has brought us the opportunity to support John Smylie in his endeavour to win the nomination for the Conservative Party of Canada for the new riding of Bay of Quinte.
John and his wife, Angela, have four adult children and three grandchildren, and are proud to reside in Quinte West, Ontario.
